When at our worst and lowest, Jesus says to us ‘I’ll take that one. That’s the one that I want.’ When we are at our best, he says ‘Let me teach you a more excellent way - to be motivated by love’. He knows us to the bottom and loves us to the sky. He goes by many names - savior, lord, friend, teacher - and he calls us his own. We have found centering our lives upon him to be a great life strategy. In his death we are transformed and in his resurrection we are made new. We center our lives on him the way a song is centered on a melody. Jesus is the song we want our lives to sing. He dwells in us and we in him. In him, we are never without hope and never alone. Our other values radiate out from the central love of Jesus among us.
Jesus asked us to love God with our mind (Mk 12:30). Therefore, value peer-reviewed science about human flourishing - the sociology, psychology, biology, and neuroscience of spirituality. We bring our best critical thinking as an act of worship, an essential to learning the way of Jesus. You can find resources on the neuroscience of spirituality here.
All humans are undergoing an inner, spiritual formation of one kind or another (Rom 12:1-2). We desire to be formed into the shape of Jesus. That spiritual formation journey is moving away from woundedness and into wholeness. Jesus has made it possible for all to walk that journey. We seek to understand and heal the pain behind our behavior.
Jesus' Kingdom is diverse, and we are called to embody that diversity, deeply seeing and understanding one another. Further, God seeks to dwell in diverse places where people are loving one another across cultural boundaries. We are inspired by Ephesians 2:21-22 - In Jesus the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
We are called to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God (Micah 6:8). We are, in the end, a Jesus people guided by the bible. Christian teachings that condemn same-sex relationships have been spiritually fruitless at best, and harmful at worst. The arc of scripture bends towards inclusion, not exclusion. Therefore, we stand in solidarity and affirmation with our LGBTQ+ siblings.
